Golf places 10th in Sun Belt Championship

The Trojan women’s golf team competed in the Sunbelt championship this past weekend. The tournament was held at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Florida. 

The Trojans’ opening round landed them in 7th place on the first day of the tournament. The Trojans were tied with South Alabama with a team score of 300.

Seniors Shaelee Scarberry and Elisabeth Preus helped drive the Trojans by scoring in the top 20 for day one. Scarberry shot even par while managing to make five birdies during the tournament’s opening round. Preus followed closely behind shooting only 2 over and making a birdie on a par 3.  Preus finished in 17th place to conclude the first day. 

Staying in the top 50, Fangmeyer and Mercado tied for 37th place scoring 5 over par. Katelynn Altese managed to place 43rd after shooting 6 over for the opening day. 

The Trojans played phenomenally on the second day of the tournament, ending the day in a three-way tie with James Madison University and Georgia State. 

Fangmeyer played a fierce game, making 5 birdies which pushed her 20 places up and into 17th place. Scarberry played well yet again by scoring 4 over leaving her in 8th place after securing two birdies for par fives. 

The Trojans fell off their game on the final day of the tournament. Dropping back four places from the previous day, they finished 10th place out of a total of 13 teams. 

Scarberry and Preus concluded the final day of their tournament playing their last round as Trojans to complete their senior season. Scarberry shot 5 over par and managed to place 21st, while Preus placed 31st with a score of 78 for the day. 

Fangmeyer had three birdies on her final round, finishing with a score of 78, just six over. Alongside Fangmeyer, Mercado placed 35th shooting five over at 77. 

The Trojans concluded their season shooting 22 over as a team and placing 10th overall at the LPGA International Golf course in Daytona Beach, Florida.
